The drone comes into myth so easily as if it had been waiting there: above the mountain, above the body, above the blue, above consequence — remote command, calibrated vision, a violence that wants to arrive already purified. What began in the polished moral weather over the skies of Afghanistan, the grave of Empires, now dreams of becoming automatic, outsourced, amorphic judgement, so that under that new halo, war starts speaking like fate.
Forged in the polished moral weather above the graveyard of empires, where occupation learned to describe itself as intelligence and killing learned to speak the language of precision. The camera came before the missile. First the long stare: villages rendered as coordinates, families reduced to patterns of movement, men classified by age, clothing, association, and proximity. Then the bureaucratic vocabulary that made annihilation procedural, signature strikes, kill chains, collateral damage.
The machinery spread. The battlefield a laboratory for a new political imagination. Military surveillance migrated into airports, borders, police departments, prisons, schools, and city streets. Biometric databases assembled faces, fingerprints, irises, and family relations. Phone records became maps of association. Satellites, cameras, watchlists, facial recognition systems, and predictive software promised to detect danger before danger had declared itself. The old imperial fantasy of seeing without being seen was reborn as infrastructure.
What began over Kabul and Kandahar did not remain there. The logic of occupation came home disguised as security - watching at the borders, streets, through workplace software, through the glowing devices carried willingly in pockets. Surveillance became the ordinary atmosphere of citizenship.
Now the drone dreams of becoming automatic: judgement without witness, violence without proximity, command outsourced to systems that cannot doubt, grieve, disobey, or be held morally accountable. Under this new halo, war begins speaking like fate. Violence expands while pretending to disappear.
